Registration & License


Registering cars after moving is a necessary task. Texas requires new residents to update their vehicle registration within 30 days which involves providing proof of insurance, an inspection, and paying the applicable fees. Texans are also required to obtain a driver’s license within 90 days of moving to the state. See below for helpful information.

Vehicle Registration

You have 30 days to register your vehicle after establishing residency in your county.

Step 1:

Obtain Texas-approved auto insurance.

Step 2:

Get auto safety inspection. (Bring proof of insurance.)

Step 3:

Register the vehicle at the county tax office. Bring the following:

  • Proof of Identity
  • Auto Insurance
  • Safety Inspection
  • Car Title
  • Application for Texas Certificate of Title (Form 130-U)
  • Registration Fees

You must register in your county of residence.

Texas Driver’s License

Bring the following to any license office:

  • Identification: driver’s license, passport, birth certificate, and social security card
  • Proof of Residency (2 documents): utility bill, insurance, or mortgage
  • Vehicle Registration and Insurance
  • Texas Driver License Application (Form DL-14A)
  • Registration Fee

Any DPS location can serve you regardless of county of residence.
