San Antonio has one of the most diverse healthcare landscapes in the country.  Instead of one central Medical Center, we have several. You will see many innovative stand-alone Neighborhood Emergency Rooms and Urgent Cares to expedite care.  We are home to a national military hospital, an award-winning medical school, and we excel in advanced specialty care making our city a destination for medical tourism!

Northwest, I-10 Area

The South Texas Medical Center is the largest and most notable medical hub. It is home our 4 major hospital health systems, urgent cares, primary care, and specialty clinics. Baptist Health System and Methodist Healthcare are the for-profit systems and Christus Santa Rosa and University Hospital are not-for-profit.  University Hospital also supports a Level 1 Trauma Center. Near this area is the UT Health Science Center which boasts a world-class medical school and residency program.  This is distinct from the University Health System, though you may find residents among the hospital halls.

North Central, Stone Oak Area

If you live near north central Stone Oak area, another healthcare metropolis has developed over the past 20 years.  Two inpatient hospitals – North Central Baptist Hospital and Stone Oak Methodist – are surrounded by ambulatory healthcare centers and physician practices making this area attractive for medical care options.

Westover Hills, Alamo Ranch Area

Christus Santa Rosa is the flagship hospital in this area with ongoing expansion of services. New for 2024, Baptist Health System and Methodist Healthcare both have development on new medical complexes. The nearby booming community of Alamo Ranch will continue to add additional healthcare choices.

Military

Known as “Military City USA”, we are home to Brooke Army Medical Center, which serves as the Department of Defense’s largest medical facility, only Level 1 Trauma Center, and a state-of-the-art rehabilitation facility called Center for the Intrepid. This medical institution supports our military community and cares for critical civilian cases as well.

The vast array of healthcare resources in the San Antonio means that no matter where you choose to live, you will have access to quality care. Do your research, find out where the nearest emergency and urgent care is located, and get established with a primary care physician that can be your guide.  Welcome to San Antonio!
